NaNo so far

As of this moment, and even though I got a late start on NaNoWriMo I have now hit the ten thousand word mark.

I have also, I believe, arrived at a schedule for writing that helps me to get it done, and done well, everyday.

For the first five days I had been falling behind a bit more each day. But two days ago since the discovery of my new method, I have done enough to catch up two days in a row. And if I keep this speed (or increase it) I should be able to have my requisite fifty thousand words completed, some time before the end of November.

If that happens there will be much rejoicing in the dick household.

Then what?

Well, if that happens, then I shall start on my second novel in December. And you will be able to buy my current one on Kindle, and Kobo, and iBooks. And so on, sometime around the middle of December, just in time for Christmas!

I will let you know when all that happens.

I am also putting a great emphasis on making sure this one is available as a real ink-on-paper book

Well… back to work.

Terror From the Depths of Space And Time

Ok, so here’s the deal.

I Started writing myNaNoWriMo novel. You didn’t know that!? Well, of course you didn’t. I never bothered telling you.

I mean, I told everyone in person, and I even mentioned it on facebook, but I didn’t put it here. On my blog … the very blog that I created just to talk about my writing!

So, here’s where it gets even more fun. I have three different novels sitting in my head right now. (Well there are actually more than that, but I was only ever considering three of them for NaNo)

One is a lovely tale of genocide and revenge. That one is fantasy with SF elements.

Another was A spooky tale about a haunted house. Very cool story and I’m hoping it turns out well.

The third was a strange SF story set in space and involving lots of weird space stuff going on. (Oh, and a threat to Earth, of course.)

Now here’s where that fun part happens. I spent this whole past week ruminating on the haunted house story. I allowed my mind to roam around in it, and tried to get into the feel of it, so that I could get a nice spooky start as soon as November rolled around.

So I’m waiting, fingers itching to start typing, and I bring up NaNoWriMo’s website to make sure I had everything entered and ready to go. Now this is MINUTES to midnight on October 31st, when I see …

The working title, and description of the SPACE STORY!!!

Well, at some point I had decided that that was the one I intended to write, and I entered all that info into their website, but I never bothered remembering that I had done so.

Just so you know. The first year I tried doing NaNo I tried writing the Genocide/revenge story. I didn’t get very far. Wasn’t ready to come out yet. That was 2013

The following year I decided to go for the Haunted house story. Never happened. But it got entered, just not written. That  was 2014

2015 I took another crack at that same novel. Again, nope.

Then I entered nothing into Nano for two years. 2016 and ’17 were a complete wash.

Well, now the planets have aligned. I have been writing for some time. I would be writing everyday even if there was no Nano. So I should be able to pull this off, right?

We shall see.

As of exactly when I am writing this post, myspace novel has 1660 words in it, so far. I got a little late start because of the whole completely-different-than-I-thought-it-would-be thing, but am slamming out the words at a brisk enough pace that I should be able to hit the mark this time.

YAY!

I could use some thoughts, and prayers. Though I will gladly accept iced tea, and Ritalin. See you on the other side!

PS-Yes, I am not only writing the novel but I am also taking the time to update this blog. (Did I mention the Ritalin?)

Dark Exit Update

Dark Exit Kobo cover
This is the Kobo cover image. Very similar to the physical book cover.

So, this is the last you’re probably ever going to hear about Dark Exit, from me.

I have expanded its availability into other countries and other formats.

I started by releasing it to Amazon’s Kindle store. So, you can get it from Amazon as a digital book to be read on your kindle, or on whatever device you have on which you’re running the Kindle app. (Such as an iPad, or a PC)

I have also created a slightly different version which is available for Kobo and through the Kobo store. They also make a Kobo app, in case you don’t have a branded Kobo E-reader.

The fun part about Kobo is that it is international. Yes, Amazon is too, but Kobo is the larger market in Europe. Also Kobo has integrated itself into Walmart, so you may actually be able to go to Walmart and buy my book. Cool, right?

And it will also be buyable as a genuine book, with real paper and ink, which you can hold in your hand, or stuff under a table leg to stop it from wobbling.

In theory this means that  you could walk into a physical book store and either ask them to get it in for you or, maybe, find it sitting there on the shelf.

Considering the rumors floating around about what is going on with Barnes & Noble, I wouldn’t get too excited about that last one. (Ok, they’re not rumors. If you want to experience big chain bookstore ambiance, you’d better get your ass in there now, because ‘Kansas is going bye bye’)

When I have all the links for these things I will append them to this post.

PS-Yes. It was a “Matrix” reference. It was a line by Cypher. I know you know. But I feel it important to give full attribution. It’s a moral issue.

Bye for now, Kiddies!

This Was So Weird!

So, I have this other blog. It’s called Nasty Horror, or the nasty horror blog or some shit like that. Doesn’t matter.

What matters is that that blog is to support my horror habit. Let me explain…

A few years back I had the idea of creating a series of horror comics in the tradition of Tales from the Crypt, and Creepy and so on. I created that blog as the place for all that stuff to be announced.

Years pass. Dark horse had begun to print a brand new Creepy magazine which sucked (Subject for a different blog post). And a few other publishers were printing such things. Some were reprints, and some were original comics.

Point is, they were out there, and the need to single-handedly resurrect the format wasn’t so crucial anymore.

Then that blog was destroyed, and needed to be rebuilt. (I suck at backing things up) And then I started this blog for my real writing, you know, short stories, novels, shit like that.

Nasty horror got destroyed again, but this time I decided to rebuild it in a way so that it would be less vulnerable and also better organized for it’s original intended purpose. I had decided to start up the graphic novels and do series’s of horror shorts after all, because the stuff that’s out there, with a few exceptions, was missing the mark by a rather wide margin.

So I began to post there, and kind of forgot that this blog even existed. I had recently published a short novella on kindle and decided to mention it on my blog.

So when I opened up this blog just now to do my next post about the book, I found that there was no post here about the book! WTF? I had posted it on my Nasty Horror blog out of habit. C’est la vie.

So the book is called “Dark Exit”. I am leaving the post up on the horror blog, because it could be classified as horror if you wish, but I am also mentioning it here. Because this is where it belongs. If you want to check it out there’s probably a link around here somewhere.

My next post will be more focused on it. I am writing a bunch of short stories right now. They are intended for publication in traditional magazines. (Yes, of course, I will tell you where and when they will be printed.)

I’m not sure when the next kindle book will come out. It won’t be too long from now. But when it does, it will be announced here, not on Nasty Horror.

PS-The image above is from the cover of the print edition. The kindle cover is different.

Behold!

… and on this day in the year of our lord 2018 did Dick behold the internet and realize that it mostly sucked ass. Thus he wept.

And in his sorrow he beheld a vision, a vision of wonder. It came to him as in a dream. With bright flashing eyes and a voice like thunder. And it did speak unto him. And it said, “Hey man, if you don’t think there’s anything good on the internet, why don’t you make good stuff and put it out there?”

So, he did.

the end.
